SCHOOL BY: RENY ROSE V. MARAVILLA WHAT'S IN A LIBRARY? BY: ALISTAIR TROY B. LACSAMANA What is a Library? According to an online definition from Oxford Languages, it is a building or room containing collection of books, periodicals, and sometimes films and recorded music for people to read, borrow, or refer to. Even before the pandemic, libraries have a collection called databases. It is an online collection of books, periodicals and videos. Last February 22, the Quezon City Public Library, together with the National Library of the Philippines and Quezon City Schools Division Office, organized an orientation on the NLP’s paid and subscribed databases. QCPL, OIC-City Librarian Ms. Mariza Chico welcomed the 165 participants from the zoom meeting and 60 others from Youtube. She was hopeful that the librarians who participated will be ready to provide their clients with useful and credible sources of information. Ms. Dolly Carungui, Reference Division Head of NLP, said it is the role of librarians and teachers to educate and teach the public and students with tools and techniques in their research and studies. Ms. Xenia Romero ably presented the databases and answered all the inquiries of the participants. Dr. Beloy, of the SDO Office of Curriculum Development, noted that the orientation was very important in encouraging students to develop their love and interest in reading and being given access to wonderful sources of information. To our public library clients and students, happy exploring. Nagpapasalamat kami ng marami sa QC Lib, in behalf of Ma’am Jaida and the whole group. Inuulit naming panoorin as a group. Congratulations!” BATINO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SPED CENTER, QCPL VIRTUAL PUPPET SHOW BY: GILBERT GALLAZA page 9 In celebration of the Pedrista Festival, the Quezon City Public Library (QCPL)-District III Branch Libraries, composed of Escopa 2, Escopa 3 and Greater Project 4, conceptualized and presented a video posted at the QCPL facebook page that featured the life of San Pedro Bautista as per approved QC Ordinance SP# 2435 dated June 29, 2015, declaring San Pedro Bautista as Local Heritage Site of Quezon City”. The yearly celebration was organized by the San Pedro Bautista Priests in honor of its founder and patron, San Pedro Bautista. According to history, Father Bautista founded the town of San Francisco in 1590 and built the town church, now named the Santuario de San Pedro Bautista, which is considered as one of the oldest landmarks in Quezon City. People living in San Francisco del Monter are proud to be the home of this religious figure that played a significant role in shaping the course of the City's history. As part of their willingness to share stories with younger generations, the staff of QCPL- District 3 Libraries introduced their collabo- rative ideas aimed at inspiring their audience to develop their interest in writing and de- monstrative original spoken word poetry. QCPL described spoken word poetry as one of the most effective ways to communicate and express our deepest feelings and thoughts. The theme was women-related, as the nation commemorated “Women’s Week” every 1st week of March and “Women’s Rights and International Peace Day” every 8th day of March under Proclamation No. 224,s. 1988, which was approved and signed by then-President Corazon C. Aquino on March 1, 1988 and the month-long commemoration of “Women’s Role in History” under proclamation No. 227, s. 1988 signed also by then President Aquino on March 17, 1988. “BABAE: Tayo ang Pagbabago”, an image of Filipina emphasizing a story and it societal role. These women are described as having values in their life like hard work, perseverance, resourcefulness, industriousness, harmonious family, faith in God, and commitment to succeed in their personal lives, or for a higher cause without seeking recognition. Participants were given a month to create and prepare on their masterpieces. They sent their videos, which served as basis for judging. Judges included Councilor Allan Butch Francisco, District Governor Raymundo Abuel Jr., and 2nd District Vice Governor Mr. Yung Roehl Castro. All these were made possible thru the efforts of Pasig Host Lions Club’s amiable Reading Action Program Abey Carlos, and ably supported by GAT George Ong- Tan, RC Eisen Floribel Carlos and IPDG Gener Generoso D. del Rosario. Winners were announced and posted on the QCPL FB Page. Five talented and artistically-inclined children with disabilities and special needs emerged as winners. These were Laemil Luis Abarra, from Barangay Sta. Lucia, who won top prize of P5,000.00; Eunice Clem Lectura San Valentin, from UP Diliman, who placed s econd and won P3,000.00; Jeewilson C. Cater from Barangay Tatalon, who won third honors and received P2,000.00; Rica Marie Agustin, from Novaliches, who placed 4th and won P1,500.00 and Tristan James del Rosario, who placed 5th and won P1,000.00, Winners also received e-certificates of recognition. The QCPL would like to extend its gratitude to all those who participated during the contest, including parents and guardians who supported and encouraged their children to take part in the said activity. QCPL’s Arts and Crafts Contest was designed to encourage and empower special children to showcase their talents and skills in a fun and rewarding avenue while underscoring the importance of watching online. ARTISTIK : AN ART AND CRAFT CONTEST FOR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES AND SPECIAL NEEDS BY: JENNIFER R. ADAJO page 11 Pursuant to Proclamation No. 563, s. 1959 as Public Library Day, and Republic Act 6949 as National Women’s Day, the QCPL-Payatas Lupang Pangako Branch prepared an out- reach activity to celebrate this two-national event. The activity entitled“Juana: Feed your children’s mind: Pick a book for free” was organized by the District II library under the leadership of Ms. Chona Masbate. Its aim was to donate or give a book to women / mothers to be able to continue engaging their children in reading books amid the rise of technology and e-books. Last March 8, 2021 (Monday) the prepared 100 pieces claim stubs with guidelines on how to receive a free book were distributed to by-passers women in front of the library. The following day, claiming of free books started, where a flock of women fall in line and wait their turn to receive the book. With a continuous adding number of women and even men in the line, hoping to pick a free book even without claim stub, Ms. Masbate decided to address the demand of these people. Logbook was used as an alternative record to those who haven’t received a claim stub for document purposes. It was an overwhelming feeling that despite of pandemic, the District II library was able to continue the service through outreach activity following the health protocol and social distancing as always reminded by the government. The outreach activity ran for one week giving away books in front of the library. About 477 total numbers of books were distributed during the event. Truly, women believed that reading a book is very important to their children as it serves as an “avenue in the journey of life to their children”, one mother said. Another mother expressed her belief that with books kids will truly enjoy reading while staying at home especially this time of pandemic, also through reading it will serve and create mother and daughter bonding. Peralta (1948-1978) January is the celebration of National Bible Month as per Presidential Proclamation No. 124 declared by incumbent President Rodrigo Duterte on January 5, 2017. With this year’s theme “God’s Word Restores”, the Quezon City Public Library through the Readers’ Services Division (RSD) and the District Libraries Division (DLD), organized an online event via Google meet platform to celebrate the occasion. Only few librarians were present in the QCPL Conference Room where the online program was conducted so as to observe health protocols. The program was led by the OIC, City Library, Ms. Mariza Chico who gave her welcome remarks to the ninety (90) plus attendees via Google meet. The invited Guest was no other than Hon. Vice-Mayor Gian Carlo G. Sotto, also a Christian church leader, who gave an inspirational message. QCPL was so lucky and blessed that the Honorable Vice Mayor accepted our invitation. Also, on that day, we were blessed to have Pastor Henry Gula as our Guest speaker. He shared his experiences that reflects in this year’s theme. He mentioned that the Bible is better than vision and that it is more reliable than emotions. He added that aside from being a source of spiritual vision and growth, the Bible is greater than miracles, more trustworthy than experience, and stronger than tradition. After the talk proper of Pastor Gula, the QCPL, through the Readers’ Services Division gave virtual certificate of recognition to our beloved pastors who have been supporting the QCPL in its spiritual journey and also in the conduct of values formation since 2008, namely: Ptr. Saturnino Balajadia, Ptr. Zaldy Sulvita, Ptr. Jonathan Rosario, and Ptr. Bayani Alpon. Also, a special certificate of recognition was virtually given to our former City Librarian, Emelita L. Villanueva as the proponent and the one who persevered to organize the conduct of Values Formation in Quezon City Public Library in 2008. After the awarding of certificates of recognition, Ms. Mary Ann Bernal, head of RSD gave the closing remarks. The virtual celebration of the Bible month was a success. To God be the glory!
